The thickener operates on the principle of gravitational sedimentation. Feed slurry enters through the feedwell at the center of the thickener, where flocculant is mixed to promote particle agglomeration. As the slurry moves outward and downward, solid particles settle to the bottom under gravity, forming a compact sediment layer. The rotating rake mechanism slowly moves the settled solids toward the central discharge outlet. Clear liquid overflows into the launder at the periphery for recovery and reuse. The underflow is discharged continuously or intermittently through a positive displacement pump.
