The spiral chute operates on the combined principles of centrifugal force, gravitational force, and differential settling velocity. Feed slurry enters at the top of the spiral and flows downward in a helical path along the trough. As the slurry flows, centrifugal force pushes heavy mineral particles to the inner edge of the trough while lighter gangue particles move to the outer edge. Cutters positioned at multiple points along the spiral collect heavy mineral concentrate from the inner zone, while middlings and tailings are collected from intermediate and outer zones respectively.
