Magnetic Separation Fundamentals

Magnetic separation uses magnetic forces to separate magnetic minerals from non-magnetic or less-magnetic gangue. It is a fundamental separation technique in mineral processing, particularly for iron ore and other strongly magnetic minerals.

Types of Magnetic Separation

Low-Intensity Magnetic Separation (LIMS):

  • Used for coarse magnetic mineral recovery
  • Typical applications: magnetite iron ore concentration
  • Field strength: 0.1-0.2 Tesla

High-Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS):

  • Captures fine and weakly magnetic particles
  • Uses fine steel wool or magnetic matrices
  • Field strength: 1-2 Tesla

High-Intensity Magnetic Separation (HIMS):

  • For weakly magnetic minerals like hematite
  • Dry and wet configurations
  • Field strength: 1-5 Tesla

Wet Magnetic Separation:

  • Lower efficiency for fine particles
